Speechify converts text to audio using AI-generated voices. The pitch: consume articles, reports, PDFs, and documents by listening instead of reading — while commuting, exercising, or doing other tasks. For consultants who need to stay current but are time-starved, that’s a compelling use case.

Whether it delivers depends on how you work.

What Is Speechify?

Speechify is a text-to-speech app that converts any text content — PDFs, web pages, Google Docs, ebooks, Notion pages, emails — into listenable audio using natural-sounding AI voices. It works on iOS, Android, Chrome extension, and desktop.

The AI voices are notably better than traditional text-to-speech. They pause correctly at commas and periods, vary intonation naturally, and handle technical vocabulary reasonably well. Reading along while listening is an option (synchronized highlighting), which some users find improves comprehension.

Pricing

Annual billing significantly reduces the effective monthly cost. Monthly billing for Premium runs ~$29/month.

Core Features

1. Listen to Any Document

The core capability: drag a PDF into Speechify and it reads it to you. This works for:

  • Research reports and white papers
  • Client documents and RFPs
  • News articles (via Chrome extension)
  • Books and long reads
  • Your own Google Docs and Notion notes

Speed control is the key feature for productivity users. Most power users listen at 1.5–2.5x speed. At 2x, a 30-page report (~15,000 words) takes about 35 minutes to “read” by listening.

For consultants who need to consume large volumes of content regularly — industry reports, client background materials, dense research — this is a genuine time multiplier.

2. AI Voice Quality

The Premium tier voices are convincingly natural. They handle most business writing well, including moderate technical vocabulary, acronyms, and proper names. Very dense technical or legal writing is harder (odd pauses, wrong stress patterns), but for the majority of consulting reading material, the quality is more than acceptable.

You can choose from multiple English voice styles (and many languages) — find one that’s comfortable for extended listening.

3. Synchronized Highlighting

While the audio plays, the app highlights the words being spoken. This feature is useful when:

  • You need to take notes while consuming content
  • You want to verify a specific claim and easily find the passage
  • You’re processing information you’ll need to discuss precisely later

It’s more active than pure passive listening and increases comprehension for dense material.

4. Chrome Extension — Listen to Web Pages

Install the extension, navigate to any article or web page, click listen. The extension strips out navigation and formatting, extracts the content, and reads it.

For consultants who read a lot of online content — industry publications, LinkedIn articles, competitor websites — this is among the most-used features.

5. AI Summary

A newer feature: Speechify can generate an AI summary of any document before or after you listen. This is useful for deciding whether to listen to the full document or just the summary.

Workflow: Review the summary → decide if the full document warrants 35 minutes → listen in full or skip. For a consultant processing dozens of reports and articles per week, this triage capability saves significant time.

What Speechify Doesn’t Do Well

Dense mathematical or technical content. Equations, code, and formatted tables don’t translate to audio. PDFs with heavy visual content (lots of charts, complex layouts) are read in a way that loses the context those visuals provided.

Interactive research. Listening is a passive consumption mode. When you need to actively research, annotate, and query — use Perplexity or Claude. Speechify is for input, not analysis.

Replacing reading for precision work. For documents where every word matters (contracts, technical specifications, detailed compliance requirements), you want to read, not listen. The error rate in AI voice rendering is low but non-zero.

Who Gets the Most Value from Speechify

High-value users:

  • Consultants with long commutes who can’t read but can listen
  • Professionals who need to process 5–10 long documents per week
  • People who retain information better through audio than reading
  • Consultants who travel frequently and want to use flight/transit time productively

Lower-value users:

  • Consultants who read quickly and already have focused reading time
  • Those working primarily with visual, data-heavy documents
  • Users who don’t have regular commute or exercise time where audio consumption is practical

The honest test: Think about your last 5 workdays. How much time did you spend doing tasks that didn’t require your eyes (commuting, exercising, doing routine admin)? If it’s less than 3 hours per week, Speechify’s value is marginal. If it’s 5+ hours, it’s compelling.

Speechify for Consulting: A Real Workflow

Here’s how I use it in a typical week:

  • Monday commute (40 min): Listen to the industry report I downloaded Friday but didn’t have time to read
  • Tuesday gym (45 min): Process 3 articles I bookmarked during the week
  • Wednesday: Use Chrome extension to listen to a competitor’s thought leadership piece while preparing for a client call
  • Thursday prep: Generate AI summary of a new 60-page RFP → listen to full document during a walk

Estimated additional content consumption per week vs. not having Speechify: ~3 hours of reading material processed during time that would otherwise be unproductive.

At $139/year ($11.60/month), the ROI calculus is easy if your consulting work involves ongoing reading volume.

Bottom Line

Speechify is a specialized productivity tool that delivers clear value for a specific type of user: consultants with high reading workloads and meaningful commute/exercise/travel time. For them, it’s one of the highest-ROI tools in the stack — turning dead time into productive information processing.

For consultants who work at a desk and already have dedicated reading time, the value is more marginal. The free tier is worth installing to test whether audio consumption works with your workflow before committing to Premium.
