Notion has been the go-to workspace app for solopreneurs and small teams for years. When Anthropic trained AI directly into the product, the question became: does it actually change how you work, or is it another overhyped feature?
After six months of daily use running a solo consulting practice, here’s the honest answer.
What Is Notion AI?
Notion AI is an AI layer built into the Notion workspace app. It’s not a separate product — it enhances what you’re already doing inside Notion: taking notes, managing projects, writing documents, and organizing information.
You access it with the spacebar (in a blank line) or by highlighting text and pressing Ctrl/Cmd+J. From there, it can write, edit, summarize, translate, fix grammar, change tone, or answer questions about your workspace.
The newest capability is Notion AI Q&A — you can type a natural language question and it searches your entire workspace to answer it. This is the feature that changes everything for knowledge-intensive work like consulting.

Notion AI is included in paid plans starting with the Plus plan at $16/month (billed annually). There’s no separate add-on purchase — if you’re on Plus, Business, or Enterprise, you get AI.
The free plan does not include AI features, though you get a limited trial.
Core Features Tested
1. AI Q&A (Search Your Workspace)
This is the headline feature and it delivers. I have ~800 pages in my workspace across client notes, proposals, research, and frameworks. Previously, finding something required knowing roughly where I’d stored it. Now I ask: “What did I document about the ACME Corp brand strategy brief?” and get an instant, cited summary.
Use cases for consultants:
- Recall client commitments, decisions, and discussion points from past meetings
- Surface relevant past work before starting a similar new project
- Find frameworks or templates you haven’t used in months

Accuracy: Strong for recent notes, occasionally misses very old content. Cite the source pages so you can verify.
2. AI Writing Assistant
Highlight any text and ask it to: improve writing, make it shorter, expand it, change tone, translate, explain, or rewrite from scratch. The “Improve writing” function is reliably useful for polishing client-facing documents without the back-and-forth of copy-editing yourself.
It’s not a replacement for Jasper or Copy.ai if you need to generate large volumes of content. But for in-context document refinement — fixing a proposal paragraph that doesn’t land, shortening a report section that rambles — it’s faster than switching to another app.
3. AI Templates (Summaries, Action Items, Meeting Agendas)
The most immediately practical AI features are the templates:
- Summarize meeting notes — paste in a transcript, get a structured summary with key decisions and action items in seconds
- Action items — pull action items from any page and list them with assignees
- Next steps — generate logical next steps from a project description
- Pros and cons — useful for decision-making frameworks
I use the meeting notes summarizer after every client call. Copy in the Otter.ai transcript → ask Notion AI to summarize → 30 seconds later I have a clean summary ready to share with the client. It’s replaced what used to be a 20-minute task.
4. AI Autofill for Databases
This is a newer feature that fills database properties automatically based on context. For a project tracker, it can auto-assign a priority, suggest a category, or summarize the project description.
For consultants managing a client or project database, this saves real manual effort. Not transformative, but it compounds over time.
What It Doesn’t Do Well
Limited to your Notion workspace. It cannot search the web or reference external information. For research-heavy work, you still need Perplexity or ChatGPT.
Not a writing powerhouse. The AI writing is competent but not exceptional. For serious content creation, Jasper produces better long-form output. Notion AI shines at refinement, not generation.
Hallucination risk. Like all AI tools, it occasionally fabricates details — especially in Q&A when it can’t find a good answer and fills in the gap. Always verify cited sources.
Performance with very large workspaces. Q&A can be slow if your workspace has thousands of pages. Organizing with proper page hierarchy and tags improves this significantly.

Here’s how I use Notion AI on a live consulting engagement:
- Kickoff call → Otter.ai transcription → paste into Notion → “Summarize this meeting” → share summary with client (5 minutes total)
- Weekly check-in prep → ask Q&A: “What are all open action items from the ACME project?” → review and update before the call
- Proposal drafting → describe the engagement scope in Notion → “Expand this into a proposal outline” → refine sections → export to Google Docs for final polish
- Retrospective → ask Q&A: “What issues came up repeatedly in the ACME project?” → surfaces patterns I’d forgotten

Notion AI doesn’t replace any specific AI tool — it makes Notion itself dramatically more useful as the hub of your consulting operations. The Q&A feature is the real differentiator: being able to query your entire knowledge base in plain English is a qualitative change in how you work with accumulated information.
At $16/month (for Plus), the AI is bundled in rather than a premium add-on. For consultants who run Notion as their primary workspace, it’s close to a must-have upgrade.
